The chemistry behind Resurrection Plant

Selaginella lepidophylla, a small fern belonging to the family Selaginellaceae and genus Selaginella, is native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico and southwestern United States. This unique plant is renowned for its survival strategy during extreme droughts—curling its fronds and forming a ball to enter a dormant state. It can survive for several years after losing up to 95% of its water content. Upon rehydration, the dried fronds reopen within hours and gradually regain their green color.

Selaginella lepidophylla is thus also known as the "resurrection plant" or "comeback plant." Research has found that synthesizing "D-trehalose" during dormancy is key to its revival. High salinity and dryness create a hyperosmotic environment, and trehalose acts as a compatible solute, replacing evaporated water to prevent excessive salt damage and maintain cell viability. When water returns to the plant tissues, the sugar crystals dissolve, and the plant's metabolism is reactivated.

Getting to water my first resurrection plant/rose of Jericho since moving here to ETX last summer. This was packed the night before Mabon back in OKC, brought home on Mabon, and watered today.

It feels good to have some of my roots back. I watered it with water from the flowers I offered my ancestors by soaking the stems in a small vial of water. It feels good. It feels right. I can feel the same energy as I feel around the bundles of the black eyes Susan. I'm so happy.

This ^ is Phil. My 12 year old philodendron that has come back from the dead at least 6 times in the time I've had him. He has been reduced to baby pot because he is nothing more than a picky little bitch who wants to die. How do I know he is picky?

This ^ is Janice. She is an offspring of Phil I propagated 4 years ago from a 6 inch cutting. She has outgrown 3 pots until finally I put her in this big one. She, like Phil, has traveled across 6 state lines with me, gets the same amount of sunlight and is on the same watering schedule with the exact same potting soil.

I'm not a bad plant dad because Phil is a disaster puppy that can't handle life. He's just dramatic. Meanwhile Janice previously was in my home office where she got little to no sun light and I regularly forgot to water her.

Phil's just picky. Don't be a Phil.
